RoastGuard
Roasting coffee is a labour of love, emphasis on the labour. Production roasters and quality control managers know all too well the amount of work that goes into ensuring that only the best coffee gets packaged and sent out to customers.
How do we establish quality standards for our roasts? Like with most food and beverage products, taste is the ultimate test of quality. However, cupping every roast can be time-consuming and costly. Moreover, it may be entirely unnecessary.
It is generally accepted that when multiple roasts of the same green lot achieve the same roasting parameters, they can be considered effectively interchangeable. Our newest feature, RoastGuard, takes this principle and turns it into a tool for managing quality control processes.
Parameters, Goals, Exclusions
RoastGuard tracks several relevant roast parameters, including temperatures, development, and total time, as well as monitoring temperature correlation over time, energy input, batch size, yield, roast loss, and colour.
Each of the parameters is checked against a custom goal that you can set. You simply decide which parameters should be checked and specify the acceptable ranges, either in terms of the measurement unit or as a percentage. From there, RoastGuard assesses whether roasts deviate from these parameters and notifies you.
Badges, Charts, Details
RoastGuard presents its results in a variety of ways from simple notification to more granular details which you can use to help organize quality control and roast corrections.
There is the notification badge on the RoastGuard tab which indicates the number of roasts from your last roast day that failed to meet your goals. And when viewing a roast you will find icons indicating whether it conforms to your goal values or fails to meet them.
For further precision, roasts also feature a RoastGuard icon which you can click to access the details view, to see exactly which criteria were not met and by what deviations. With this level of information, the quality control team will know exactly which roasts to cup, and the production team will be able to assess these roasts for clues on how to improve consistency going forward.
